New and shiny things are always exciting but what really matters is how practical these things turn out to be. The 2017 Chevy Camaro ZL1 looks promising as it’s the first GM model to arrive with a 10-speed auto gearbox but how much performance boost would this bring?
Fortunately, the all-new ZL1 doesn’t disappoint as now, it’s capable of hitting a top speed of 198mph, which makes it the fastest Camaro ever produced. It’s not only impressive, it’s good enough to come on par to the Chevy Corvette Z06 which also holds a top speed of 198mph.
A vehicle’s top speed is calculated by averaging the numbers gained from running it in opposite directions. The ZL1 managed to hit 202.3mph in one direction while recording 193.3mph in the other direction.
The Camaro ZL1, churning out 650hp and 650lb-ft torque, is definitely as fast as the Corvette Z06 but it is still lagging behind the Dodge Charger Hellcar, capable of 707hp and 650 lb-ft, which manages to hit 204mph top speed.
GM is still not done boasting all it has to offer when it comes to performance. If it wants to one up FCA, it’ll have to not only beat the Hellcat but also murder the upcoming Dodge Challenger Demon. Perhaps the 2018 Corvette ZR1 may be the ideal model for this.
The ZR1 has went through iterations that made it capable of 205mph and if the rumors that an 800+hp model may be arriving soon materializes, even the 217mpg Ford GT wouldn’t stand a chance.
