They may not technically be direct rivals, but the Chevrolet Corvette and Ford Mustang are going to play an important role in pushing the threshold for the capabilities of high-power performance vehicles in the market.
At this juncture, the range-topping Ford Mustang GT350/R is capable of 526hp from a 5.2L V8, while the Chevrolet Corvette Z06 shares the same 6.2L LT4 V8 with the Camaro ZL1 that produces 650hp.
Both vehicles are going to be topped by even more powerful models – the Mustang is set to welcome a GT500 while the Corvette is going introduce an a new ZR1. And they are each believed to worth a lot more than 700hp.
They are still in development, with GM and Ford keeping mum about when exactly they’re arriving or what they have in store. However, several reports claim that the ZR1 is going to boast an all-new LT5 V8 engine with a biturbo setup that would make the Lamborghini Aventador blush.
It is still unclear what’s going to be under the hood of the Mustang GT500. Some source suggest that it is also going to adopt turbocharging, but no one really knows if it’s going to be a V8 or a V6. Perhaps it might be based on the EcoBoost V6 block in the Ford F-150 Raptor, plus another two cylinders.
