Just because it looks like the real thing, doesn’t mean it is. Recently, the efforts of some spy photography brought what looks like pictures of the next-gen 2018 Jeep Wrangler to the Internet. And it wound up in the JL Wrangler Forum.
It showed the vehicle at an FCA facility parking lot in Michigan, and from the rear angle one could easily think that that’s the upcoming Wrangler pickup, given that its greenhouse seemed to eschew rear doors, though it had a soft top.
But a report by Road & Track begs to differ, arguing that the particular Wrangler in the picture dons a single, unbroken body along with a canvas roof that stretches the whole way to the back. That would be too peculiar for the Wrangler pickup, as it’s supposed to sport a body-on-frame construct.
The Wrangler JL is meant to have a traditional setup that’s partitioned into three areas: the engine section, the cab, and the bed. Plus this image just doesn’t match previous spy shots of the Wrangler pickup.
What we’re seeing in the picture is really a Jeep Wrangler, but an offshoot called the J8 that’s used for military operations in the Middle East. This isn’t all too surprising, given how malleable the 4×4 has proven itself to be all these years.
