Despite Fiat Chrysler not having much to offer for the 2017 North American International Auto Show in Detroit, CEO Sergio Marchionne still took the opportunity to reveal some exciting details on the soon-to-arrive Jeep Grand Cherokee.

Marchionne disclosed that the next-gen Jeep Grand Cherokee will be built on a rear-wheel-drive platform, produced by Alfa Romeo. Road & Track believes that this could very well be the platform used by the Alfa Romeo Giulia.

This same platform will be modified to work with the upcoming Alfa Romeo Stelvio SUV as well as a couple of other new Alfa vehicles. Both the Giulia and Stelvio offer an AWD setup which shows that it won’t be that hard for Jeep to incorporate an off-road capable 4WD setup into the platform.

Fiat Chrysler is currently undergoing a major product shift in order to eradicate the huge debt linked to the automaker. Platform sharing is an excellent way to take the product portfolio further as well as help in saving funds on development costs.
