It appears that Porsche has found the perfect formula on how to make convertibles safer for the driver and occupant. The method is through creating an airbag for the A-Pillar and this is an idea which Porsche doesn’t want to share with rival makes.
Porsche was spotted patenting a sketch on how the airbag on the A-Pillar works and it is likely to get implemented on every convertible produced by Porsche in the future to come.
As how you can see above, the airbag stretches the length of the A-pillar when deployed. Several tests have been conducted by Porsche and it is proven to work like wonders.
But then again, the fact that the patent now belongs to Porsche means that rival carmakers will need to pay royalty if they want to apply the same airbag module on their convertibles. Doing so will lead to an increment in prices of future convertibles and it will be interesting to see how the public reacts to this.
