The 2018 Honda Civic Type R is a beast of a machine and it has proven its strength by recording 7 minutes 43.80 seconds to circle the Nurburgring – a new record for a front-wheel drive production car.

The 2018 model has managed to beat the previous version of the Civic Type R sold in Europe by about seven seconds and it even beat the previous record holder, the Volkswagen Golf GTI Clubsport S, by three seconds!

However, keep in mind that this was a pre-production car which Honda claims is “technically representative” of the latest Honda Civic Type R.

Honda also insists that a roll cage was equipped for safety purposes and not to improve the car’s rigidity. To compensate for the additional weight gain, the automaker removed the infotainment system as well as the rear seats. Aside from these, Honda is certain that this model is extremely close to its production variant.

The 2018 Honda Civic Type R will be making history as this will be the first model to be sold in North America. The model will be equipped with a 2.0L turbocharged mill that is capable of churning out 306 horsepower and 295 lb-ft of torque, paired to a six-speed manual tranny.
